A brief history of
The Antique Map Shop... Established over 30 years ago by proprietor Dave Gardner, The Antique Map Shop Ltd, specialises in genuine antique maps, town plans, sea charts, and other engravings from the mid 16th to the early 20th Century. Initially, Dave travelled the country buying and selling at various antique fairs, in the process making invaluable contacts within the map trade. The business at this time was named Earley Maps, after Dave's Berkshire home town. When the business moved to the historic city of Bath in South-West England, it was initially based at the Antiques centre in Bartlett Street. Now, with our own premises, we can be found on one of the city's iconic landmarks, Pulteney Bridge. We have been in this fabulous location for about nine years and it makes the shop is very easy to find: only a five minute walk from the Roman Baths and Bath Abbey, and very near the 'Rec', the famous home of Bath Rugby. Our stock regularly includes original works from 17th century map makers and publishers such as John Speed, Willem Blaeu and Jan Jansson, as well as later work from the likes of Robert Morden, Thomas Kichin, John Ogilby, John Tallis, Thomas Moule and many more. The huge variety of maps that comes through the shop covers areas as small as a single town and as vast as the entire world. We do not make copies of the maps: they are all as dated and at least 100 years old.The Antique Map Shop Ltd guarantees this, and each map or print comes with its own certificate of authenticity. | More to come...please watch this space... |
